Voice Commands
Control punctuation, formatting, and text manipulation with your voice.
How it works
Say these commands naturally while recording. MurmurTone will recognize them and insert the appropriate text or action.
Punctuation Commands
Insert punctuation marks by saying the command name:
| Say | Result | Example |
|---|---|---|
"period" | . | "Hello period" → "Hello." |
"comma" | , | "Hi comma how are you" → "Hi, how are you" |
"question mark" | ? | "How are you question mark" → "How are you?" |
"exclamation mark" | ! | "Wow exclamation mark" → "Wow!" |
"colon" | : | "Note colon" → "Note:" |
"semicolon" | ; | "First semicolon second" → "First; second" |
"hyphen" or "dash" | - | "Self hyphen aware" → "Self-aware" |
"open quote" | " | "He said open quote hello" → "He said "hello" |
"close quote" | " | "hello close quote" → "hello"" |
"open paren" | ( | "Note open paren" → "Note (" |
"close paren" | ) | "details close paren" → "details)" |
Navigation Commands
Control text flow and cursor position:
| Say | Result | Description |
|---|---|---|
"new line" | ↵ | Insert a single line break |
"new paragraph" | ↵↵ | Insert two line breaks (paragraph) |
"tab" | → | Insert a tab character |
Editing Commands
Correct mistakes and modify your transcription:
| Say | Action | Description |
|---|---|---|
"scratch that" | Delete all | Delete the entire last transcription |
"delete last word" | Delete word | Delete only the last word |
Timing matters
"Scratch that" works best immediately after a transcription. If you've typed manually since the last transcription, it will still attempt to delete the previous voice input.
Case Manipulation
Change the capitalization of the previous word:
| Say | Action | Example |
|---|---|---|
"capitalize that" | First letter uppercase | "hello" → "Hello" |
"uppercase that" | All uppercase | "hello" → "HELLO" |
"lowercase that" | All lowercase | "HELLO" → "hello" |
Formatting Commands
Apply text formatting (works in applications that support rich text):
| Say | Action | Keyboard Shortcut Sent |
|---|---|---|
"bold that" | Bold last word | Select + Ctrl+B |
"italic that" | Italicize last word | Select + Ctrl+I |
"underline that" | Underline last word | Select + Ctrl+U |
Application support
Formatting commands work in Word, Google Docs, email clients, and most text editors. They won't work in plain text applications like Notepad.
Custom Commands
You can create your own voice commands using the Custom Dictionary feature in Settings:
